Energy Transition

Silver and the energy transition

The International Energy Agency's critical-minerals analysis projects clean-energy technologies driving outsized demand growth for a short list of metals. Silver rarely headlines those reports next to lithium or copper — yet it is embedded in nearly every technology they describe: solar generation, electrified transport, and the grid hardware connecting both.

Generation: solar first

Photovoltaics are the energy transition's fastest-scaling technology and silver's fastest-growing demand category at the same time — not a coincidence. Every gigawatt of solar capacity installed carries millions of ounces of silver in cell metallization paste.

Use and movement of energy

Electric vehicles and their chargers, heat pumps, industrial electrification and the switchgear that manages a more electric grid all specify silver-bearing contacts and electronics. Electrification is, component by component, a silver-consuming project.

The supply side of the transition

Here is the tension the IEA and USGS both flag across critical minerals: demand from policy-driven buildouts arrives on political timelines, while new mine supply arrives on geological and permitting timelines — and for silver, mostly as a byproduct of mining other metals. A metal cannot answer a policy deadline it does not control. Would a short, no-pressure conversation help?

Leave your name and number. A Capstone specialist will answer your questions during business hours.

Most gold and silver firms can only talk to you about gold and silver. We have licensed advisors on staff, so the same conversation can cover your retirement accounts, your market holdings, insurance and estate structure alongside a completely private metals purchase — one fiduciary review of everything you own, not a sales call about one product.

Common questions

Is silver the most important metal of the energy transition?
It is one of several — lithium, copper, nickel and rare earths all matter. Silver is distinctive because it is simultaneously a monetary metal and an industrial input, so investors and industry compete for the same ounces.
Do wind turbines use silver?
Wind uses far less than solar — some in power electronics and slip rings. Photovoltaics are the dominant renewable-energy consumer of silver by far.
Why solar needs silver
What happens if silver runs short?
Prices ration demand: thrifting accelerates, recycling becomes more economic, and some applications substitute. Shortages in a byproduct-supplied metal resolve slowly — that is the structural story.
