Supply

The silver supply chain, mapped

Silver's supply chain has three unusual features: most of it is produced as a byproduct of mining other metals, production is concentrated in a handful of countries, and the United States imports most of what it consumes. Understanding those three facts explains most of what happens in the silver market.

Mining: a byproduct industry

Only a minority of silver comes from primary silver mines. The rest is recovered from copper, lead-zinc and gold ores, which means silver output is largely a function of those metals' economics. Mexico, China and Peru have led mine production for years, with Chile, Australia and Poland significant.

Refining and fabrication

Doré from mines moves to refiners who produce good-delivery bars for the London and COMEX markets, grain for industrial users, and blanks for mints. Refining capacity is geographically concentrated, and certified-bar logistics — the chain from refiner to vault to dealer — is what stands behind any retail coin or bar you buy.

Recycling and above-ground stocks

Recycled silver — from industrial scrap, jewelry, silverware and increasingly electronics — supplies a meaningful minority of annual demand. Unlike mined supply, recycling responds to price: high prices draw metal out of drawers and factories. Above-ground bullion stocks in exchange vaults and depositories buffer short-term squeezes. Would a short, no-pressure conversation help?

Leave your name and number. A Capstone specialist will answer your questions during business hours.

Most gold and silver firms can only talk to you about gold and silver. We have licensed advisors on staff, so the same conversation can cover your retirement accounts, your market holdings, insurance and estate structure alongside a completely private metals purchase — one fiduciary review of everything you own, not a sales call about one product.

Common questions

Which country produces the most silver?
Mexico has led world mine production for years, followed by China and Peru, per USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries.
Can supply grow quickly if prices rise?
Slowly at best. Primary silver mines are a minority of supply and take many years to permit and build; byproduct output depends on other metals' prices.
The byproduct problem
How does physical silver reach an IRA?
Refiner to mint or fabricator, to dealer, to an IRS-approved depository under your custodian's account — with chain-of-custody documentation at each step.
