Rollover

Rolling a 401(k) into physical gold

A 401(k) cannot hold bullion you own personally, so converting one to gold means rolling it into a self-directed IRA that can. A plan from a former employer can usually be rolled over in full. A current-employer plan depends on whether it permits in-service distributions — many do from age 59½. Everything below is the process, the cost and the limits, before anyone asks you for a decision.

Why a 401(k) cannot simply hold gold

FACT. Employer plans offer a fixed menu — usually mutual funds and company stock — and physical bullion is essentially never on it. Some plans include a gold or mining fund, which is exposure to a paper position rather than metal you could take delivery of. To hold IRS-eligible bullion with retirement dollars, the money moves into a self-directed IRA where an approved custodian holds the account and an approved depository holds the metal.

  • Plan menus rarely include physical metal; a gold fund is not the same thing
  • A self-directed IRA is the standard vehicle that permits eligible bullion
  • The custodian and depository are independent of Capstone

A self-directed Gold IRA holds the real thing — physical coins recorded in the account ledger and held by a qualified custodian, not a fund share that tracks a price.

A self-directed Gold IRA lets you hold physical gold — real coins in a custodian's vault — inside a tax-advantaged retirement account, not an ETF that merely tracks the price. The ledger, glasses and fountain pen in this scene are the paperwork that proves the metal is titled in your name and held by an IRS-approved custodian such as Preferred Trust Company or GoldStar Trust Company. Capstone Metals coordinates the custodian, the depository and the purchase end to end, so a 401(k) or IRA rollover into physical gold moves as a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer with no distribution and no tax event — the protected, step-by-step path this page walks you through.

Check eligibility first

One call to your plan administrator answers it, and there are only two questions: is a direct rollover to an IRA available, and does the plan allow in-service distributions? Former-employer 401(k), 403(b), 457(b) and TSP balances are usually fully eligible. We will tell you exactly what to ask so you are not guessing on the phone.

Avoid the 20% withholding trap

FACT. If a 401(k) pays you directly, the plan must withhold 20% for federal tax — and to stay whole you must redeposit the full pre-withholding amount within 60 days, covering that 20% from other money until you recover it at filing. Miss the deadline and the shortfall becomes taxable income, plus a 10% additional tax if you are under 59½. A direct trustee-to-trustee rollover avoids every part of this.

You don't have to move everything

Many plans allow partial rollovers, so you can allocate a portion to metals and leave the remainder invested where it is. Most clients who convert do so partially — this is a diversification decision, not an exit.

What it costs, stated plainly

There is a custodian account fee, an annual storage fee at the depository, and a premium over the spot price on the bullion itself. Capstone quotes prices rather than charging cards, and no figure is hidden until after you commit. A conversion that surprises you later is a bad conversion.

Whether you should, not just how

Most people researching this are really deciding whether to act at all. Because Capstone has licensed financial advisors on staff, that conversation can cover the whole picture — the plan, other holdings, income needs, insurance and estate structure — instead of metals alone. If a rollover is not right for you, we would rather say so than process one.

Doing this with a firm you can actually reach

A conversion involves your plan administrator, an independent custodian and a depository, and the person who keeps those three moving matters more than any brochure. Capstone Metals is operated by TB Alternative Assets LLC, a California-registered company, and works with families across the United States by phone and text — (800) 200-9553, Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm Pacific. The same number reaches us whether you want a quote, a rollover walked through, or a second opinion on paperwork another firm sent you.

  • One number, staffed by the people who do the work — not a call centre
  • Preferred Trust Company and GoldStar Trust Company hold the account; they are independent of us
  • Written figures before you commit, and no card charged at any point

A specialist can answer this in two minutes. Monday – Friday, 7am – 4pm Pacific.

Would a short, no-pressure conversation help?

Leave your name and number. A Capstone specialist will answer your questions during business hours.

Most gold and silver firms can only talk to you about gold and silver. We have licensed advisors on staff, so the same conversation can cover your retirement accounts, your market holdings, insurance and estate structure alongside a completely private metals purchase — one fiduciary review of everything you own, not a sales call about one product.

Common questions

How do I convert my 401(k) to gold?
Open a self-directed IRA that permits precious metals, request a direct rollover from your plan to that custodian, then select IRS-eligible bullion which the custodian buys and the depository stores. The funds never pass through your hands, so nothing is taxed as a distribution.
Can I roll over while still employed?
Only if your plan allows in-service distributions. Many permit them from age 59½. If yours does not, an older plan from a former employer can usually still be moved.
Will converting a 401(k) to gold trigger taxes or a penalty?
Not when it is done as a direct trustee-to-trustee rollover — that is a transfer within the retirement system, not a distribution, so there is no tax and no early-withdrawal penalty at any age.
The exact steps, and the mistakes that cause a penalty
Does a TSP work the same way?
Yes — Thrift Savings Plan funds can be rolled to a self-directed IRA after separation, and sometimes earlier under the plan's own rules.
TSP to Gold IRA
Is a gold 401(k) a real thing?
Not in the way it sounds. There is no employer plan that holds bullion for you; the phrase usually refers to a 401(k) rolled into a precious-metals IRA, or to a gold fund inside a plan menu. Those are different products with different risks, and it is worth knowing which one is being offered to you.
Gold IRA vs physical gold
How long does the conversion take?
Most direct rollovers settle within one to three weeks, and the pace is set almost entirely by how quickly the releasing plan acts. We will not promise a date we do not control.
