Why is silver used in solar panels?

Every crystalline-silicon solar panel — the kind on rooftops and solar farms worldwide — contains silver. It is printed onto each cell as a fine conductive paste, and it is the reason the cell can deliver its current to the outside world. Solar photovoltaics have become the single fastest-growing source of silver demand on record.

What the silver actually does

When sunlight knocks electrons loose in a silicon cell, those electrons must be gathered and conducted away with minimal loss. Screen-printed silver paste forms the grid of fingers and busbars on the cell's surface that does exactly that. Silver is used because it conducts better than anything else and forms reliable contacts with silicon at manufacturing temperatures.

Why not just use copper?

Manufacturers are trying — copper plating and silver-coated copper pastes are active development areas, and the industry steadily 'thrifts' less silver per watt each generation. But copper oxidizes, contacts degrade, and efficiency losses cost more than the silver saved in many designs. Newer high-efficiency cell architectures (TOPCon and HJT) actually use more silver per watt than the older PERC standard, which is why total solar silver demand kept rising even as per-cell thrift improved.

The scale of it

The Silver Institute estimates photovoltaics consumed on the order of 200 million ounces in recent years — roughly a fifth or more of total silver demand and climbing. A standard residential panel holds on the order of 15–25 grams; a gigawatt of new solar capacity implies millions of ounces. Would a short, no-pressure conversation help?

Leave your name and number. A Capstone specialist will answer your questions during business hours.

Most gold and silver firms can only talk to you about gold and silver. We have licensed advisors on staff, so the same conversation can cover your retirement accounts, your market holdings, insurance and estate structure alongside a completely private metals purchase — one fiduciary review of everything you own, not a sales call about one product.

Common questions

Will solar panels stop using silver?
Thrifting will continue, but credible industry forecasts still show solar as a top source of silver demand through this decade; higher-efficiency cells currently increase silver per watt.
Can silver be recycled out of old panels?
Yes, technically — but panel recycling infrastructure is young, and most installed panels will not reach end-of-life for 20–30 years.
How silver recycling works
Does solar demand set the silver price?
No single use sets the price — investment flows, jewelry and total industrial demand all interact with a supply chain that cannot expand quickly.
