Supply & Demand

Silver industrial demand: the numbers behind the record

Silver is no longer primarily a jewelry and investment metal by volume. According to the Silver Institute's World Silver Survey, industrial fabrication has climbed to over half of total annual demand — record territory — driven by photovoltaics, electronics and electrification. Here is where hundreds of millions of ounces actually go each year.

The category breakdown

Electrical and electronics applications form the largest industrial block, with photovoltaics the standout growth line inside it — on the order of 200 million ounces in recent years. Brazing and solder, automotive, and other industrial uses (medical, water purification, catalysts) make up the rest. Jewelry, silverware, photography and investment compete for what remains.

  • Photovoltaics — roughly a fifth of total demand and the fastest-growing line
  • Electronics and electrical — contacts, solder, capacitors, connectors
  • Brazing alloys and solder — plumbing to aerospace
  • Automotive — rising with EV share
  • Medical and antimicrobial — wound care, coatings, water purification

Demand versus a supply that can't hear it

Total silver demand exceeds a billion ounces a year, and the Silver Institute has reported structural supply deficits in recent years — demand exceeding mine plus recycling supply, with the gap drawn from above-ground stocks. A deficit in a byproduct-supplied metal cannot be closed by price signals alone, which is why these deficits have persisted across multiple years.

What industrial demand means for a buyer

Industrial users buy silver to consume it, not to sell it back — that metal leaves the investable pool permanently. When investment demand rises on top of record industrial offtake, the two compete for the same finite flow, which is historically when physical premiums over spot widen. Common questions

Is industrial or investment demand bigger for silver?
Industrial is bigger and steadier; investment is smaller and far more variable. Silver's volatility comes from that smaller, moodier investment layer sitting on an industrial base.
What is a supply deficit in practice?
More silver consumed than mined and recycled in a year, with the difference coming out of vaults and stockpiles — finite buffers that must eventually be refilled or rationed by price.
How supply works
Where can I follow this data myself?
The Silver Institute publishes the World Silver Survey annually, and the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries cover production and reserves — both are public.
