Silver conducts electricity and heat better than any other metal, but engineers also choose it for contact reliability: silver oxide still conducts, so a silver contact keeps working after corrosion that would kill a copper one. In switches, relays and connectors that must work for decades, that property is worth real money.
Multilayer ceramic capacitors, printed circuit board finishes, membrane switches, LED packages, RFID antennas, and the solder itself. A smartphone carries a fraction of a gram; the world's annual production of phones, laptops, servers and appliances multiplies that into one of silver's biggest demand categories.
At fractions of a gram per device, silver is a tiny line item — so the savings from engineering it out are small, while the reliability risk is large. Substitution happens at the margins (aluminum in some conductors, copper plating in others) but the Silver Institute's data shows electronics demand persisting year after year.
