Palladium price vs gold: two metals, two completely different jobs

Palladium and gold are often quoted side by side because both trade by the troy ounce, but they answer to different buyers. Gold is priced by central banks, savers and jewellery demand. Palladium is priced overwhelmingly by one industry — autocatalysts. That single difference explains almost every divergence in the two charts.

Is palladium more expensive than gold?

Usually no — but it has been. Between roughly 2018 and 2022 palladium traded above gold, at times well above it, because catalytic-converter demand outran a very thin supply. Since 2023 palladium has fallen back sharply and gold has traded above it again. So the honest answer is that the ranking is not fixed: gold is normally the more expensive metal per ounce, palladium can overtake it during industrial shortages, and anyone quoting a permanent ranking is quoting a snapshot. Check the live spot price before you assume either way.

  • Gold: deep, global, monetary demand — thousands of tonnes held in reserves
  • Palladium: roughly 200-300 tonnes of annual mine supply, concentrated in Russia and South Africa
  • Thin supply plus one dominant end use equals violent price moves in both directions

Why the price charts do not track each other

Gold's price responds to real interest rates, currency confidence and central-bank buying. Palladium's price responds to vehicle production, emissions rules and substitution — when palladium got expensive, engineers substituted platinum, and demand simply left. A metal that can be engineered out of a product has a ceiling that a reserve asset does not.

Which one is a store of value

Gold is held because it has no counterparty and a five-thousand-year record as money. Palladium is a commodity input with an investment market attached. Both can appreciate; only one is bought by institutions specifically to preserve purchasing power. That is a distinction about purpose, not a prediction about price.

Liquidity and spread, in practice

Gold coins and bars have the tightest bid-ask spreads in the physical market and a buyer in every country. Palladium bullion is a much narrower market: fewer products, fewer dealers making a two-way price, and wider spreads when you sell. If you may need to exit quickly, that spread is part of the real cost.

Both are IRA eligible — with conditions

IRS rules allow gold, silver, platinum and palladium in a self-directed IRA. Palladium must be at least .9995 fine and produced by an approved refiner or mint, and it must be held by an approved depository, not at home. The eligibility test is the same for both metals; the suitability test is not.

Would a short, no-pressure conversation help?

Leave your name and number. A Capstone specialist will answer your questions during business hours.

Most gold and silver firms can only talk to you about gold and silver. We have licensed advisors on staff, so the same conversation can cover your retirement accounts, your market holdings, insurance and estate structure alongside a completely private metals purchase — one fiduciary review of everything you own, not a sales call about one product.

Common questions

Is palladium more expensive than gold right now?
Gold has traded above palladium since 2023, but palladium was the more expensive metal for much of 2018-2022. Because palladium's supply is thin and its demand is concentrated in one industry, the ranking can flip. Check live spot prices rather than relying on a remembered figure.
See live spot prices
Why was palladium ever worth more than gold?
Tightening vehicle emissions standards raised the amount of palladium needed per catalytic converter at the same time that mine supply — concentrated in Russia and South Africa — could not expand quickly. A supply deficit in a small market produces a very large price move.
Is palladium a good hedge against inflation?
It behaves more like an industrial commodity than a monetary metal, so it tends to track vehicle production and manufacturing cycles rather than currency debasement. Investors seeking purchasing-power preservation generally start with gold, and treat palladium as a separate industrial position.
How allocation is usually structured
Can I hold palladium in a Gold IRA?
Yes. A precious-metals IRA can hold palladium at .9995 minimum fineness from an approved producer, stored with an approved depository. The account is often called a Gold IRA, but the rules cover four metals.
What a precious-metals IRA can hold
Which is easier to sell, gold or palladium?
Gold, clearly. There are more products, more dealers quoting both sides of the market, and tighter spreads. Palladium can be sold, but expect a narrower market and a wider spread between bid and ask.
