Strategic Materials

Is silver a strategic metal?

The words matter. A precious metal is valued for scarcity and monetary history. A critical mineral is essential and supply-vulnerable. A strategic material is one a country needs for defense and economic security and cannot quickly replace or stockpile around. Silver, unusually, is all three at once.

The defense case

Military electronics, communications, guidance systems, radar and satellites rely on high-reliability conductors and contacts where silver's conductivity and corrosion resistance are difficult to engineer around. Defense planners care less about silver's price than about never being unable to buy it.

The energy-security case

Solar capacity is now central to national energy strategy, and every panel contains silver paste. A country building grid-scale solar on policy deadlines cannot treat silver as just another commodity purchase; that is the logic that put it on the 2025 U.S. critical minerals list.

What strategic does not mean

Strategic is a supply-chain word, not a price prediction. Governments have held strategic stockpiles of materials that fell in price for years, and ignored materials that soared. For an individual, the takeaway is narrower: the metal you can hold in your hand is the same metal governments now compete to secure. Would a short, no-pressure conversation help?

Leave your name and number. A Capstone specialist will answer your questions during business hours.

Most gold and silver firms can only talk to you about gold and silver. We have licensed advisors on staff, so the same conversation can cover your retirement accounts, your market holdings, insurance and estate structure alongside a completely private metals purchase — one fiduciary review of everything you own, not a sales call about one product.

Common questions

Is silver more strategic than gold?
They are strategic in different ways. Gold is held by central banks as a monetary reserve; silver is consumed by industry and defense. Silver's industrial indispensability is why it, and not gold, landed on the U.S. critical minerals list.
Does the U.S. military stockpile silver?
The National Defense Stockpile historically held large silver reserves but disposed of them decades ago. Whether the new listing changes stockpile policy is an open policy question we track.
The stockpile story
What makes any mineral critical or strategic?
Essentiality to the economy or defense, plus supply-chain vulnerability — measured by import reliance, producer concentration and substitutability.
