Gold or silver in your IRA? An honest comparison

The question we hear most often is simple: is it better to invest in gold or silver? There is no single right answer — the two metals do different jobs inside a retirement account. Gold is the steadier store of value with the deepest liquidity. Silver costs far less per ounce, moves harder in both directions, and carries genuine industrial demand. This page compares them plainly so you can decide what belongs in your own IRA precious metals allocation.

Is it better to invest in gold or silver?

Judge each metal by the job you need it to do. Gold has been the world's monetary reserve for millennia; central banks buy it, it trades in enormous daily volume, and it usually moves less violently than silver. Silver is both money and industrial input — solar panels, electronics, EVs and medical devices consume it — so its price responds to manufacturing demand as well as monetary stress. That extra demand engine cuts both ways: silver has produced larger gains in metal bull markets and larger drawdowns in downturns.

  • Gold: lower volatility, deepest liquidity, central-bank demand
  • Silver: lower price per ounce, higher volatility, industrial demand
  • Gold suits the ballast portion of retirement savings
  • Silver suits the growth-oriented satellite portion

Gold vs silver investment pros and cons

Both metals qualify for the same self-directed IRA, so this is an allocation decision rather than an account decision. The practical differences show up in volatility, storage cost and how quickly a large position can be sold at a tight spread.

  • Gold pro: steadier value, tighter spreads, cheapest to store per dollar held
  • Gold con: higher price per ounce, smaller historical upside in metal rallies
  • Silver pro: lower entry point, industrial demand, historically larger rallies
  • Silver con: more volatile, bulkier — storage is quoted by space as well as value

Is gold and silver a good investment for retirement?

Honestly: they are insurance, not a growth engine. Neither metal pays a dividend or earns interest, and no one can promise either will rise. What they have historically done is hold purchasing power when currencies weaken and behave differently from stocks and bonds, which is why most allocations sit between 5% and 20% of retirement assets rather than at either extreme. If you need income from the account in the near term, or you would be uncomfortable seeing a position fall 25% in a year, size accordingly or stay in paper assets.

How do you invest in gold and silver through an IRA?

The mechanics are identical for both metals and no different from opening any IRA. You open a self-directed account with a custodian that permits physical metals, fund it by transfer, rollover or annual contribution, then direct the custodian to buy IRS-approved bullion, which ships straight to an approved depository. You never take personal delivery while the metal is inside the account.

  • Open a self-directed IRA with a metals-capable custodian
  • Fund by trustee-to-trustee transfer, 401(k) rollover, or contribution
  • Choose the gold and silver mix, then the custodian buys on your instruction
  • Metal is stored, insured and audited at an IRS-approved depository

What qualifies: IRA precious metals standards

The IRS sets a fineness bar and a source bar. Only bullion from sovereign mints or accredited refiners qualifies, which keeps the account in liquid, fairly priced metal and out of collectibles sold at heavy premiums. If anyone offers you graded, 'exclusive' or proof coins for an IRA at a large markup, that is a reason to slow down.

  • Gold: .995 minimum fineness (American Gold Eagle is a statutory exception)
  • Silver: .999 fine — American Silver Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, accredited bars
  • Platinum and palladium: .9995 fine, eligible in the same account
  • Never eligible: numismatic or graded collectibles, jewellery, home-stored metal

Gold taxation compared with an IRA

Outside a retirement account, physical gold and silver are treated as collectibles: long-term gains can be taxed at up to 28%, higher than the usual long-term capital gains rate. Inside an IRA, that disappears. A traditional metals IRA grows tax-deferred, a Roth can offer tax-free qualified withdrawals, and moving existing retirement money in by direct transfer or rollover is not a taxable event. Required minimum distributions still begin at age 73 for traditional accounts, and distributions before 59½ can face tax plus a 10% penalty. At distribution you choose cash or in-kind delivery of the metal itself.

  • Personally held metal: collectibles treatment, up to 28% on long-term gains
  • Traditional metals IRA: tax-deferred growth, RMDs from age 73
  • Roth metals IRA: potentially tax-free qualified withdrawals
  • Direct transfers and rollovers: no tax event when handled trustee-to-trustee

A sensible starting mix

Most of our clients build a gold core with a silver satellite — often two thirds gold, one third silver — then adjust for temperament and timeline. Closer to retirement, weight gold for stability and tighter spreads. Further out, and comfortable with swings, a larger silver weighting adds torque. There is no prize for precision here; what matters is that the total metals allocation is a size you can hold through a bad year without selling.

Before you open anything, ask these questions

The firm you work with should educate first and sell second. Ask for the complete fee schedule in writing, the dollar spread on the metal itself, the custodian and depository names, and the buy-back policy. A trustworthy answer arrives in writing, without a countdown timer attached. Anyone who insists a decision must happen today is selling urgency, not metal.

  • The full fee schedule, in writing, before funding
  • The buy/sell spread stated in dollars, not vague percentages
  • Named custodian and IRS-approved depository
  • A written buy-back policy and live, verifiable pricing
