Gold IRAs and 401(k) rollovers

A Gold IRA lets you hold physical IRS-approved gold and silver inside a tax-advantaged retirement account. These videos explain how the accounts work, how a 401(k) rollover moves funds without triggering taxes, and what the custodian actually does.

Capstone works with Preferred Trust Company and GoldStar Trust Company — two established self-directed IRA custodians — and can walk you through the entire process.

Common questions

How does a Gold IRA work?

You open a self-directed IRA with a custodian, fund it by transfer, rollover or contribution, then direct the custodian to purchase IRS-approved bullion. The metals are held in an approved depository — not at your home — under the IRA's name.

Can you move a 401(k) into a Gold IRA?

Yes. A direct rollover moves funds from a 401(k) — typically from a former employer — into a self-directed IRA without taxes or penalties when done correctly. The custodian handles the paperwork; the funds never pass through your hands.

What metals are allowed in an IRA?

The IRS requires minimum fineness: gold 99.5%, silver 99.9%, platinum and palladium 99.95% — with specific approved coins like American Eagles also permitted. Collectible coins generally don't qualify.
