The Commander Series is Scottsdale Mint's flagship high-relief programme, and the Cortés five-ounce is its heavyweight: five troy ounces of .9999 fine silver, struck in relief deep enough that the conquistador's helmet stands proud of the field, with a gold highlight over the portrait against a frosted background.

This example is graded NGC PL70 Early Releases. PL — Prooflike — recognises mirrored fields on a bullion-format strike, and 70 means no flaw at 5x. Early Releases is a pedigree for coins submitted within the first 30 days of release. Perfect prooflike populations on this issue are counted in the dozens, not the thousands.

Five troy ounces of .9999 silver carry $346.95 at today's $69.39 spot. The premium above that is the mint's high-relief work, the gold highlight, the perfect prooflike grade, the Early Releases pedigree and a mintage capped for the series rather than struck to demand.

Scottsdale Mint launched the Commander Series to portray commanders who changed the map — issued under the authority of the Central Bank of Liberia, with the Coat of Arms of Liberia on the obverse and the denomination, fineness and weight stated on the coin itself.

Hernán Cortés (1485-1547) sailed from Cuba to the Mexican mainland in 1519 with roughly 500 men and, in two years, brought down the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan — an event that redirected the flow of silver and gold across the Atlantic for the next three centuries and, not incidentally, created the Spanish American silver dollar that the United States dollar was later modelled on. The series presents him in the sculptural tradition of the period's armour, in a portrait built for a three-dimensional strike.

The 2024 Cortés was issued across silver and gold formats. Independent references record the one-ounce gold Cortés at a mintage of 2,000 pieces; the five-ounce silver format was struck in far smaller numbers than mainstream bullion issues, and perfect-grade certified examples are the thin end of that.

A Spanish commander from Extremadura who landed on the Mexican coast in 1519 and, within two years, ended the Aztec empire at Tenochtitlan. The silver that followed out of New Spain became the eight-real piece — the Spanish milled dollar that circulated worldwide and served as the model for the United States dollar. The Commander Series portrays that history rather than endorsing it.

Ultra-high relief requires multiple strikes and a far higher rejection rate than ordinary bullion. On a five-ounce planchet the tooling stress and the handling risk both rise, which is why perfect examples of large high-relief coins are scarce even in the release year.
