As issued by the United States Mint, every America the Beautiful piece is a 3-inch, 5 troy ounce .999 fine silver coin with a vapor-blasted matte finish, the incused edge marking .999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE, and no mint mark on the bullion issues. The Mint shipped them in tubes of five inside sealed monster boxes; certified examples like the one photographed above were pulled from those original tubes and submitted for grading, which is why an untouched, high-grade survivor trades far above a raw coin.

Three things stack on this one coin. First, the Prooflike (PL) designation: PCGS awards it only when the fields carry genuine mirror reflectivity, which on the bullion-finish five-ounce coins is uncommon and is visible in hand as a deep watery surface behind the fort. Second, First Strike, meaning the coin was submitted within the first month of the Mint's release. Third, the label is hand-signed by John M. Mercanti, who served as the twelfth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint and designed the reverse of the American Silver Eagle — the most recognised silver coin design in the world. A signed label is a one-time, non-reproducible event tied to that specific holder and certificate number.
Fort McHenry guarded the entrance to Baltimore harbour, and on the night of 13 September 1814 it absorbed twenty-five hours of Royal Navy bombardment without falling. Francis Scott Key watched from a truce ship in the harbour and, seeing the garrison flag still flying at dawn, wrote the verses that became The Star-Spangled Banner. Joseph Menna's reverse for the 2013 America the Beautiful five-ounce coin shows the fort's ramparts with the flag and the bursting shells of that night — the moment the anthem describes, rendered on three inches of .999 fine silver. Fort McHenry was the second of five designs released in 2013 and remains one of the most historically resonant coins in the series.

PL is a surface designation, not a grade. PCGS applies it when the fields show true mirror reflectivity. On the vapor-blasted five-ounce bullion coins that is unusual, so PL examples are a small subset of the graded population.
John M. Mercanti designed the heraldic eagle reverse used on the American Silver Eagle from 1986 to 2021 and served as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Signed labels are produced in limited signings and are tied permanently to one certificate number.
The reverse depicts the bombardment of 13 to 14 September 1814 that produced The Star-Spangled Banner. Few American coins carry a design tied that directly to the national anthem.
